Paralakhemundi (Gajapati): Tension prevailed at Katalkaitha, on the outskirts of the district headquarters town after an ambulance hit a minor girl killing her on the spot. The deceased identified as S Laxmi belongs to the local village.

According to reports, the shocking incident took place when the 10-year-old girl was crossing the road as the speeding ambulance hit her causing critical head injuries. Profusely bleeding Laxmi is said to have died on the spot.

Locals have detained the ambulance which was later found transporting vegetables and some other household articles stuffed in several bags. Villagers along with the family members of the deceased staged road blockade demanding adequate compensation to the bereaved family.

Meanwhile, vehicular traffic has been disrupted on Mohana-Paralakhemundi road as around hundred vehicles including buses, trucks and cars have been stranded on both side of the road due to the road blockade.

Locals have demanded strict action against the ambulance driver alleging rash driving that claimed a life.

Police rushed to the spot and recovered the body for post-mortem. The ambulance has also been detained, police said.
