Malkangiri: A Maoist was killed during an encounter with a combined team of Special Operations Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) in a forest near Nunkhari at Madakapada under Mudulipada police limits in the district last night.

The security forces reportedly received an input about Maoists’ presence and their camp in Nunkhari forest and accordingly launched an operation.

Soon after the combined forces reached the camp, the rebels opened fire at them. The security personnel also retaliated. The gun battle continued for around two-three hours.

Unable to face the indiscriminating fire of the joint forces, the Maoists left the area and escaped into the wilds.

The security personnel recovered the body of the slain extremist near the camp.

Sources said that the rebels had set up a camp in the forest and planned to unleash fresh violence in the nearby areas. They are suspected to be the members of Andhra-Odisha border division committee.

Meanwhile, combing operation has been intensified in the forest area following the fierce gun battle, sources said.

The left wing extremists upped in ante as the red rebels are fast losing their base in the district with elimination of many of their colleagues in police firing in the past in Malkangiri.

Moreover, they also have received a severe jolt after more BSF camps were set up in the Swabhiman areas in the district.

In a separate development, the Maoists reportedly kidnapped two civilians from Gumma village in Kandhamal district on suspicion of them being police informers.
