Sundergarh: In a bizarre incident, a man allegedly killed his live-in partner and buried the body in the backyard of his house in a slum near Sabdega under Talsara police limits in the district.

Though Khaeru Naik reportedly committed the crime on Saturday, the incident came to the light on Tuesday morning after he confessed to the crime before fellow villagers.

Following his revelations, neighbours handed Khaeru over to the police.

Sources said the deceased, identified as Sakuntala Naik, who had deserted her husband and two children, was living with Khaeru for the last 30 years. Recently he allegedly developed relationship with another woman in the same locality and began ignoring Sakuntala.

Villagers alleged that Khaeru, along with the woman, had killed Sakuntala and buried her body in a bid to destroy evidence.

Neighbours suspected foul play following the sudden disappearance of Sakuntala. They caught hold of Khaeru and grilled him to ascertain the whereabouts of Sakuntala. During sustained questioning, Khaeru broke down and allegedly admitted that he had killed his live-in partner Sakuntala and buried the body in the backyard of his house.

The villagers then informed the police following which a team of officials from the Talsara police station reached the village and took Khaeru into custody.

Officials said that they will exhume the body in the presence of the district magistrate and send it to a nearby hospital for post-mortem.
