Berhampur: In a bizarre incident, a man has been fined Rs 1,000 for driving a truck without wearing a helmet in Berhampur town of Ganjam district.

The matter came to light on March 12 after the vehicle owner, identified as Pramod Kumar Swain of G.Jagannathpur area in Berhampur, went to the Regional Transport Officer (RTO), Ganjam recently to renew the permit of his truck.

He was in for a shock when he was handed over a challan which was issued by the Berhampur Traffic Police on December 25, last year. In the challan, it was mentioned he had been charged a fine of Rs 1,000 for ‘driving without helmet’.

Though the truck driver reportedly tried to speak to the concerned RTO officials, none gave him a satisfactory answer. With no other alternative at his disposal, Swain was forced to shell out the fine amount following which the permit of the vehicle was renewed by the RTO.

Earlier on February 4, a truck driver and his helper were fined Rs 1,000 by the Jajpur police for not wearing helmets in Chandikhol area in the district. The incident came to light after a photo of the challan went viral on various social media platforms.
