Kandhamal: Locals staged a protest against the proposed Eco Retreat Project at Daringbadi in this District on Tuesday alleging that the administration has not consulted with them before deciding to set up the project in the area.

They took to the streets when the district administration was conducting a survey at Saringirpi village under Daringbadi block. Thousands of people gathered at the place and raised slogans against the administration. They also blocked the road by burning tyres to register their protest.

“The administration will snatch away our land and won’t allow us to work in the project. We should be allowed to do farming on our lands instead,” stated local resident Dhiren Pradhan.

According to reports, the villagers didn’t relent although attempts were made to give them assurances. Finally, the administration had to relent and officials retreated from the place.

“We will continue our protest till the administration hold dialogues with us. We have full rights over the forest land and we will not spare an inch of it,” said another resident Tiadi Nayak.

It is worth mentioning that earlier the State Government has identified the land as forest land.
