Bhawanipatna: In a major crackdown on online fraud, the Kalahandi police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested as many as five cyber fraudsters from Uttar Pradesh in connection with the online duping of a senior citizen in Kalahandi.

The accused have been identified as Abhilash Singh, Parvez Ahmed, Wahid Khan, Sahrukh Khan and Zuned Ahmed. However, another accused is still at large. An amount of Rs 52,388 in cash was also recovered from them.

“A special team led by Kalahandi Superintendent of Police arrested the accused after a thorough probe into the incident. All the accused have been forwarded to court,” said Ramesh Chandra Sethi, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Bhawanipatna.

According to reports, one Gangadhar Subudhi had lost Rs 2.65 lakh to an online fraud on January 16 following which he had lodged a complaint with the Bhawanipatna police station.

As per the complaint, he had received a phone call about winning a prize from a customer care executive of a telecom company. The caller impersonated himself as an agent of a telecom service provider and told Subudhi that his name has been selected for an award of Rs 20,000 and a mobile phone. The fraudster then sent an app link to his mobile phone and asked Subudhi to download it.

As directed, Subudhi downloaded the app and submitted his wife Saralabala Prusti’s bank account details with the caller over phone. Within seconds, Rs 2.65 lakh was debited from their accounts in instalments.

Without losing any time, Gangadhar rushed to the police station and filed a complaint regarding the cyber fraud. He also met Superintendent of police, Kalahandi Cyber cell who assured him of taking stringent action against the fraudsters.
