Bhubaneswar: Traffic violators beware as the Transport department has launched the e-challan project, which was inaugurated in Bhubaneswar today. The e-challan project is an upgrade from the manual vehicle report (VCR) to electronic form wherein penalty for traffic violations will be processed online. Transport Minister Nursingha Sahu informed that e-challan devices will come handy as it will eliminate all kinds of manipulation and bring in transparency in collection of motor vehicle fines from violators.

“So far we have provided 192 e-challan devices to Motor Vehicle Inspectors (MVIs) and other officials of the Transport department and similar devices will also be provided to police officials to collect fines under the Motor Vehicles Act,” said Sahu.

Through the electronic devices, the officials can know the history of a driver as well the vehicle. This will help the officials levy more fines in case of repeated violations. Transport Commissioner, Sanjib Panda informed that adequate training has been given to the Transport department officials under the e-challan project.

“The new system will ensure that drivers are extra cautious. Such cautiousness on the part of drivers will certainly help reduce road mishaps and ensure road safety,” said Panda.
