Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government has allowed opening of commerce stream at higher secondary level in 30 Odisha Adarsha Vidyalayas (OAVs) from the new academic session 2021-22.

In a letter to the State Project Director (SPD) of OAVs, Raghuram R. Iyer, Additional Secretary, School and Mass Education Department wrote, "I am directed to inform that Government has been pleased to approve the proposal submitted by you for opening of Commerce stream in 30 OAVs."

Besides, 60 new Post Graduate Teacher (PGT) posts in Commerce stream will be created at these 30 OAVs in the new academic session.

"Creation of 60 posts of PGT in Commerce stream (Level-11 in Pay matrix under ORSP Rules, 2017) in lieu of abolition of existing 30 posts each of PGT, Hindi and PGT, Odia in those OAVs," the letter read.

The State government had opened Science stream at higher secondary level in Adarsha Vidyalayas in 2019-2020 academic session.

The School and Mass Education Minister Samir Ranjan Dash had also said that the government will introduce vocational courses in Adarsha Vidyalayas. However, vocational courses are yet to be opened in these model schools.

A one of its kind initiative, Adarsha Vidyalayas are state-run English medium schools affiliated to the CBSE.

In the last budget in February, the State Government had allocated Rs 400 crore under Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya scheme for establishment of block-level model schools and functioning of the existing ones.
