Berhampur: A man sustained critical bullet injuries hours before his marriage as some unidentified miscreants opened fire at him late on Tuesday night at Manikapur village under Khallikote police limits in Ganjam district on Wednesday.

The injured, identified as Jitendra Barik, has been admitted into Berhampur Hospital in a critical condition.

According to reports, the incident took place when Barik visited his relative's house in the village. The miscreants came from behind and opened fire at him.

Barik sustained injuries in the attack and fell on the ground in a critical condition. Later, the miscreants hurled bombs and fled the spot. Family members of Barik rushed him to the hospital.

Police reached the spot immediately after receiving the information and launched an investigation into the incident.

A day earlier, a youth riding pillion on a motorcycle was killed after some explosives he was reportedly carrying exploded near Nirmalajhar chhak in the district.

As per preliminary reports, the two youths were apparently carrying crude bombs to an unknown destination ostensibly to execute a crime. On their way, the bike slipped and the bombs which the pillion rider was holding in a handbag fell on the ground triggering a blast.

The explosion was so severe that one hand of the pillion rider was blown away and fell a few metres away from the mishap spot. The youth who was driving the bike also suffered critical injuries in the explosion.

The deceased was identified as Mitu Maharana alias Kalia of Nua Phasula village. The injured, Silu Pahan, hails from the same village.
