Bhubaneswar: The State government on Tuesday recommended the Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC) to hike the compensation amount for cases of electrocution deaths and injuries to people.

Addressing the Assembly on Tuesday, State Energy Minister Dibyashankar Mishra said that the government has recommended a compensation of Rs 4 Lakh as ex-gratia to the kin of the deceased in electrocution deaths, Rs. 2 Lakh to the victim with 60% burn injuries and Rs 59,100 to the victims who sustain injuries to the extent of 40% to 60%.

Mishra also informed about the proposal for compensation in terms of medical expenses too. As per his statement, if a patient who suffered electrical injuries stays in the hospital for treatment for more than a week, he will get a compensation of Rs 12,000 in his medical bill. If a patient is admitted for less than 7 days, he will receive a compensation of Rs 4,500.

Apart from that a compensation of Rs 30,000 will also be provided if domesticated cattle like cows and buffaloes get killed due to electrocution while in case of goats, sheep and pigs, the compensation amount has been fixed as Rs 3000. The energy minister has also suggested to provide a compensation of Rs 5000 to people who lose their poultry farm due to electrocution mishap.

In an answer to a question pertaining to deaths due to electrocution in the State, Mishra said 882 people have died due to electrical shock in the last six years from 2014 to 2019. Similarly, a total of 43 elephants have also died for the same reason during the period.

Earlier, The Central Electricity Supply Utility (CESU) had urged Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC) on 10 February this year for collection of additional bill from consumers to meet the expenses of compensation being given to victims of electrical accidents, which the Electricity Consumers’ Association had strongly opposed.
