Puri: An official notification issued by the Odisha Government for acquisition of land adjacent to Meghanad Pacheri and within the 75-metre radius of Srimandir has invoked mixed reactions among the locals in the pilgrim town.
It may be noted that residents and various stake holders have been opposing the Puri district administration's demolition drive in the pilgrim town terming it as unilateral and aimless. However, a notification in this regard was finally issued by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department on Wednesday.
As per the notification, after a social impact assessment (SIA) survey and measurement by the district administration, land acquisition process will be carried out in at least five sahis of the town under Section 4 of Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013.
The administration will acquire a total of 15.191 acre government land (2.6465 acre) and private land (12.5445 acre) in Baselisahi, Manikarnika Sahi, Kalikadevi Sahi, Dolamandap Sahi and Chudanga Sahi for the project, read the notification.
The process of acquisition and survey will be completed within a month, added the notification.
Meanwhile, the residents of Baselisahi have opposed the move and said they will not leave the land and also threatened give up their lives if the administration forces them to leave their land.
“We will not get leave our houses. I do not want money, I want my land,” said a resident of Baselisahi whose land will be acquired as per the official notice of the government.
“I am not going to leave my house. The government can give me money, what about the memories. I am ready to die but won’t give my land, said another resident.
However, many opined that the government should have issued the notification much earlier.
“I welcome the move. The administration should have issued the notification first and then provided the blueprint so that residents would have got enough time before the acquisition,” said mahant of Katiki mutt, Bijaya Ramanuj Das.
