Bhubaneswar: Continuing with its move to push for cleaner transportation, the Department of Heavy Industry has approved the sanction of 5595 electric buses to 64 cities across India,  including 50 buses for Odisha under the second phase of FAME India scheme.

As per official sources, the fleet of 50 electric buses has been allotted to Capital and Smart city Bhubaneswar.

Earlier on July 20, Science & Technology Minister, Ashok Panda in Odisha Assembly had informed that the electric buses will operate within the radius of 100 kms radius in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri.

“We are going to phase out conventional mode of transport system, Odisha will start operating electric buses within 100 km range in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Puri,” Panda had said in Assembly.

Earlier, the Department of Heavy Industry had invited the Expression of Interest (EoI) from million-plus cities, smart cities, State/UT capitals and cities from special category states for submission of proposal for deployment of electric buses on operational cost basis.

As many as 86 proposals from 26 States/UTs were received for the deployment of 14988 e-Buses.

Following suggestions of Project Implementation and Sanctioning Committee (PISC), the Government of India has sanctioned 5095 electric buses to 64 Cities / State Transport Corporations for intra-city operations.

“The States have been asked to initiate the procurement process in a time bound manner for deployment of sanctioned electric buses on operational cost basis,” said a senior official.
