Bhubaneswar: The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry today approved an increase of 100 MBBS seats under Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) quota in several medical college and hospitals in Odisha.

Earlier, the Odisha government had decided to implement 10% EWS quota in medical institutions from this academic session.
Following the increase, the seat capacity at Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital in Baripada will be 125, up from existing 100 seats. Similarly, the intake at Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput has also gone up to 125 from 100 seats.

Fifty additional MBBS seats have been approved for Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research. With this, the total intake of the college has gone up to 200 against existing 150 seats.

As SCB Medical College & Hospital, Cuttack and MKCG in Berhampur are already having 250 seats each; the intakes cannot be increased further as per Medical Council of India (MCI) norms, informed sources.
