Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Wednesday arrested five dreaded criminals of notorious ‘Katuri Gang’ (Axe Gang) which has been terrorising the twin city residents for the last several months.

The criminals identified as Ganesh Koti, Shankar Das, Jaga, Sushant Guru and Sudam Nayak were indulged in snatching, robberies and loot cases in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, Police Commissioner Saumendra Priyadarshi said at a press meet.

The gang used to target lonely persons especially women during morning walk, the commissioner added. They used to attack the morning walkers with daggers, axes and terrorized them before snatching ornaments and other valuables from their possession, he informed.

After a spurt in such crimes, the Commissionerate police had formed a special squad comprising top officials from Khandagiri and Sahid Nagar police stations. The squad successfully arrested the criminals.

“As many as 19 gold chains weighing around 200 gram, 6.2 kg silver, Rs 13,600 cash, a Pulsar bike and a weapon-dagger which was used in the crime, have been recovered from them,” Priyadarshi said.

All the criminals are involved in around 25 cases registered at different police stations in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. The Commissioner added.
