Puri: The Vigilance sleuths on Friday conducted simultaneous raids on the houses and offices of former revenue inspector (RI) Basanta Kumar Mohanty of Balukhanda RI circle in Puri district on charges of amassing disproportionate assets.

Several teams of the anti-graft officials carried out searches at eight places including Mohanty's  house at Friends Club in Puri, three storied building at Kumuti Lane, double storied building at Penthakata, relative's house at  Balighat, house of relative at Friends Lane, house of associate at Penthakata and office chamber at Balukhanda RI Office.

Similar raids were also conducted at his paternal house at Rajnagar in Kendrapara district. The searches were done on the strength of search warrants issued by the Special Judge, Vigilance, Bhubaneswar.

Sources said, Mohanty was engaged in the measurement and demarcation of the heritage corridor that is being developed on 75-metre area from the Meghnad Pacheri (boundary wall) of the 12th century Lord Jagannath shrine in the pilgrim town.

Several allegations including massive corruption in selling and purchase of land, land mutation and changing the land holding pattern were leveled against him earlier.

In a another graft case, the Vigilance officials on Friday caught the medial officer in-charge-cum- Superintendent of Hemagiri Community Health Centre (CHC) in Sundargarh red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000.

The officer identified as Sradhakar Gartia had demanded the illegal gratification from one Kalpana Patel, the former Multipurpose Health Worker (MPHW) of Hemagiri CHC for regularisation of her leave period, Vigilance officials said.

Following a complaint by Patel, a trap was laid on Friday and the accused medical officer was caught red-handed by the officers of Vigilance at MPHW Mangaspur CHC in the district while accepting the bribe from the complainant, the officials added.

Later, the Vigilance sleuths conducted simultaneous searches at his government residential quarters and office chamber at the campus of Hemagiri CHC and his residential building at Sambalpur Town. The exact amount of disproportionate assets unearthed will be known after the raids are completely over.
