Cuttack: Renowned painter and former President of Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi, Siba Panigrahi passed away at his residence in CDA Sector-6 in Cuttack on Monday. He was 78.

Raj Panigrahi, son of the noted painter, shared the news of his demise. According to his statement, Panigrahi suffered a cardiac arrest while he was at home. Though, he was rushed to the SCB Medical College and Hospital, the doctors declared him brought dead.

“He had wished that his mortal remains to be cremated at Sati Chaura crematorium after his death. Because the place falls near his home and he wanted me to remember him while crossing Sati Chaura,” said a mourning Raj.

Panigrahi received many awards during his illustrious career as a painter including the President’s Award, Chakadola Samman, Bhumi Chitra Samman and Sarala Puraskar among others.

Orphaned from an early age, he was brought up by his aunt in Baripada. He received his higher education at Khallikote. As far as his service career goes, he served at the SCB Hospital in the family planning department.

Besides, he was the President of Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi from 2013 till 2015.

Condolences poured in from many quarters after the news of his demise broke. BJP National Vice-President, Baijayant Panda’s office tweeted, “Baijayant Panda expresses profound grief and sorrow on the demise of noted painter from Odisha, Shri Siba Panigrahi.”
