Bhubaneswar: After reporting over 1000-plus daily infections for the last five days, the Covid-19 single-day cases in Odisha breached 2000-mark on Wednesday for the first time in 2021 when as many as 2267 persons tested positive and three patients succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours.

Out of the total cases detected in 29 districts of the State, a total of 1,314 cases were reported from quarantine centres while the rest 953 were local transmission cases.

Odisha had last hit 2000-mark on October 17, 2020 when 2019 people had tested positive for the virus, 1168 from quarantine and 851 local contacts, said a data released by the State Information And Public Relations (I&PR) Department.

While one patient died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Bhadrak district, the other two deaths were reported from Ganjam and Jajpur districts, said the State Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) Department.

Similarly, while seven districts registered a three-digit figure, Sundargarh district topped the list with 458 cases, followed by Khordha (348), Sambalpur (120), Bargarh (120), Cuttack (117), Nuapada (104) and Nabarangpur (104).

Districts which reported over 50 fresh cases are- Bolangir (93), Ganjam (70), Puri (70), Balasore (67), Mayurbhanj (60), Keonjhar (55) and Jajpur (52).

With the inclusion of Wednesday’s figure, the number of total cases in the State surged to 3,55,353 while 1,933 have succumbed to the disease till date and 3,41,123 patients have been cured or recovered. The active cases in the State stood at 12,244 on Wednesday, added the H &FW Department.

The State has so far tested a total of 9,46,1720 samples including 33,251 on Tuesday. Odisha’s positivity rate stands at 3.74 per cent.
