Kandhamal: In a major crackdown, a police constable with another person were arrested on the charge of illegal smuggling of ganja at Baliguda in the district on Tuesday.

The constable has been identified as Bisambara Behera, who was working in the Baliguda police station.

Acting on a tipoff, Phulbani Sadar police intercepted a vehicle near Baliguda and seized the contraband weighing 80 kg. The vehicle was on its way to Bhubaneswar. The cops detained Bisambara and another person. They also seized the vehicle along with a bike.

The Constable has been placed under suspension. A case was later registered under Sections 489(A), 489(C) and 34 of IPC and Sections 20 (B) (II)(C), 25 and 29 of NDPS Act.

Further investigation was underway to arrest other persons involved in the ganja smuggling.

It is worth mentioning that earlier this month, Odisha police had seized over 14 quintal of Ganja (dry cannabis) and arrested eight persons including one home guard in this connection in Malkangiri district.

The police had seized 14.11 quintal of dry cannabis in the crackdown and arrested the eight persons including the home guard of MV 79 police station and a woman.

The expected market value of the seized Ganja was over Rs 1 crore. The seized contraband was being transported in a truck to Bihar.

Apart from the truck, police had also seized one four-wheeler, one bike and five mobile phones from the possession of the drug peddlers.
