Baripada: A day after a woman police officer was suspended for gross misconduct and dereliction of duty in Mayurbhanj district, another incident of police excess has been reported from the same district on Tuesday.

A police constable has been placed under suspension for allegedly beating a man during helmet checking at Saharapada bypass road near Karanjia in the district on Monday evening.

Similarly, the driver of the police van has been discharged from the services in this connection.

"The 6th Batallion OSAP constable RK Singh has been suspended and a home guard has been discharged from the services as per norms. A departmental inquiry has also been initiated to find out any others' involvement in the incident. If anyone is found involved, action would be taken accordingly," Mayurbhanj SP Parmar Smit Parshottam Das.

According to reports, a young businessman was going to his friend's house on Monday evening. Some police personnel stopped him near Saharapada bypass as he was riding a bike without helmet.

"I was about to park my vehicle besides the road while a constable hit me on my head. I lost conscious. Law doesn't permit police to beat public without any cause," the victim who sustained severe head injuries, said.

Meanwhile, tension erupted after locals staged a protest demanding action against the erring police officials. As tension mounted, one platoon of forces was deployed at the place to avoid any kind of eventuality.

Later, senior officials rushed to the spot and discussed the matter with the irate locals and pacified them.

It may be noted, the Officer-in-charge (OIC) of Sarat Police Station, Reena Baxala, had been suspended on Sunday for allegedly making a pregnant woman walk for 3 kilometres as the latter was riding pillion with her husband without helmet.

Mayrubhanj SP had ordered the disciplinary action and a departmental inquiry against her for gross misconduct and dereliction of duty.
