Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Tuesday arrested a fraudster for allegedly duping a medical aspirant on the pretext of providing an MBBS seat in MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.

The conman, Sunil Samantaray, who impersonates himself as a journalist, has been arrested from in front of a bar in Bhubaneswar.

As per reports, the accused approached the JEE rank holder's father and promised to arrange a seat for his son in MKCG. In order to trick the complainant and win his confidence, Samantaray issued documents confirming booking of theseat for MBBS admission.

"He called me up and promised to arrange an MBBS seat for my son. Altogether he took Rs 15.3 lakh from me, but failed to arrange a seat. He had assured to return the money, but did not," complainant KP Udgata alleged.

When asked by mediapersons why he has been defrauding people of lakhs, the accused claimed he was not behind the fraud and dodged further question.

Sources said that similar cheating cases have also been registered against Samantaray at Infocity and Chandrasekharpur Police Station in Bhubaneswar.

"The accused had demanded Rs 15 lakh promising a medical seat. When the promised seat was not given, the complainant repeatedly demanded his money back. But he was evading the complainant. Following the complaint, we have arrested the accused," Chandrasekharpur IIC, Sarat Sahu said.

According to sources, the accused used to maintain a lavish lifestyle and was crazy about luxury cars.

The police have seized a SUV from Samantaray’s possession. All the financial transactions of the accused will be thoroughly verified along with the documents issued by him, said police officials.

The documents will be sent to a handwriting expert and more information will be sought from JEE officials, said a senior police official requesting anonymity.
