Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Police has collected penalty of more than Rs 15 crore from people for violating Covid-19 norms enforced to stem the spread of Covid-19 in the State so far.

In a media briefing, Director General of Police (DGP) Abhay said, the hefty amount has been collected from disobedient people for mask rule and social distancing violation. The police have so far arrested as many as 553 people for the offence.

The top cop said fine amounting over Rs 6 crore has been collected only from the people for not wearing masks. Similarly, more than Rs 8 crore has been collected from the owners of the vehicles flouting Covid-19 rules. As many as 21,406 vehicles have been seized. Moreover, 1632 excise cases have been registered.

“A substantial number of people are not obeying the Covid-19 norms despite strict surveillance by the police. I appeal them to obey the guidelines implemented by the government. All the people should use masks and obey social distancing rules. If they will not be cautious, it will only help in the spread of the virus,” said Abhay.

Meanwhile, he has also urged people not to come to the police station during the lockdown period.

“I urge people not to come to the police station during the time of lockdown. If they have any complaints, they could lodge those over telephone,” he said.
