Dhenkanal: Close on the heels of series of missing and subsequent deaths of children in Odisha, a three-year-old boy at Khankira village under Nihal Prasad police limits in Dhenkanal district who went missing on Wednesday, was found dead in a well on Thursday.

The body of the minor boy has been recovered from the open well near his house in the village. The deceased identified as Kalia is the son of Chandan Sahoo same village.

The father of the deceased alleged that police didn’t act in time even being informed about the missing of the little boy too early.

“We informed the police in the evening at around 7 pm on Wednesday over phone and later sent the complaint through WhatsApp. But, the officials reached the village late night and asked us, why a written complaint was not lodged,” father of the deceased, Chandan Sahoo said.

The Inspector-in-charge (IIC) of Nihalprasad Police Station, Chittaranjan Behera has, however, refused to comment on the matter saying that investigation is in progress.

Sahoo alleged that his son was murdered before being dumped into the well. He suspected the role of his sister-in-law (wife of his younger brother) in the incident.

The minor boy went missing since Wednesday when he was playing in front of his house. Family members and neighbours launched massive searches till late night, but to no avail.

Some women found the body floating in the well on Thursday morning while they were fetching water from the well.

The incident sent a shockwave in the district at a time when series of such cases from various places across Odisha have rocked the State.

The much sensational abduction and subsequent murder of five-year-old Nayagarh girl ‘Pari’ has sparked state-wide outcry. The case is being investigated by a Special Investigation Team of Odisha Crime Branch.

Similarly, two-year-old girl ‘Pihu’ of Madhusudanpur under Binjharpur police Limits in Jajpur had gone missing for the last five months. Police are yet to make any breakthrough in the missing of the minor girl.

In another such development, the body of the three-year-old girl 'Swati' of Badhipatna under Ranpur police limits in Nayagarh district who allegedly went missing last week was fished out from a pond near her village.

Preliminary investigation said that the girl died due to drowning. However, the parents of the deceased have suspected foul play behind the death of the little girl.

The back to back such incidents have triggered a massive public and political outcry in the State. The Opposition parties in Odisha, BJP and Congress continue to attack the State government over failure of State machineries in providing safety to the children.
