Jajpur: The last rites of martyred Jawan Sashank Sekhar Samal was performed at his native Khetrapal village under Dharmasala block in Jajpur on Sunday night with full state honours.

32-year-old Sashank is survived by his one-year-old child, wife and parents.

Sashank served the Indian Army for 9 years and was last posted in Ladakh.

On Thursday Sashank's family received a phone call informing about his death in Ladakh. However, his family said they have not been informed about the reason behind his death, say reports.

The martyred soldier's mortal remains reached his native village three days after his death on Sunday night wrapped in the Tricolour. Thousands of locals gathered to pay their respect to the son of the soil who sacrificed his life in the line of duty while protecting the motherland.

Offering his condolences Chief Minister Of Odisha Naveen Patnaik said, "Saddened to hear the martyrdom of Odia Jawan Sashank Shekhar Samal in Ladakh. Offering prayers for his soul and condolences to the bereaved family members."

Subedar Bichitranand Samal of 120 battalion said, "As Ladakh is an operational area and Sashank fought heroically without defying fears and lost his life to protect the motherland,  he will always be in our hearts. The country will never ever forget his sacrifice, may he rest in peace."

In his condolences District BJP President Gautam Ray said, " It's a matter of great honour that Jajpur has been blessed with the brave son who did not hesitate to sacrifice his life protecting the motherland. Heroes are not born every day and not everyone is blessed with such bravery. Generations will remember Sashank's sacrifice. May he rest in peace."

Offering condolences to the bereaved family members of martyred soldier on behalf of the district administrations, Mihir Prasad Mohanty, the Deputy District Magistrate Said," Thousands of people from the length and breadth of the district gathered to show respect to the martyred soldier and his family. It reflects the love of Jajpur for its brave heart. However, it's also heartbreaking that Jajpur has lost its brave son. He will always be remembered and may he rest in peace."
