Berhampur: In a new twist to the brutal murderous attack on a 8-year old girl in the city, the police said that the assailant slit the throat of the girl following an attempt to rape her.

On Thursday morning the town woke up to the horrific news of a small girl rescued from a locked room with her throat slit. Locals who saved the girl roughed up one of the assailants, who had taken the girl into the room, before handing him over to the police. The girl is presently battling for life at the SCB Medical College in Cuttack.

Superintendent of Police (SP), Berhampur, Pinak Mishra told OTV that prima facie and circumstantial evidence suggest that the assailant had made an attempt to rape the girl. It is believed that when the girl put up a resistance her throat was slit with an intention to silence her.

Mishra said, “From what we have gathered from the preliminary probe and witness statement, it appears an attempt was made to rape the girl.”

The senior police official further said that the prime accused had lured the girl into the isolated room and attempted to rape her. Later, he attacked her with a sharp weapon as she raised an alarm.

“The exact reason behind the incident is still unclear as we are still awaiting medical reports.

The minor girl has sustained critical injuries on her throat and face,” said Mishra.
Mishra said that the minor girl has been admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack where her condition is said to be critical.

The police have already rounded up two persons, including the prime accused, in connection with the ghastly crime. Mishra said further probe is underway.
