Puri: Acting tough against corrupt officers, Puri police on Sunday initiated disciplinary action against two personnel accused of bribery and negligence in duty.

Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of Krushnaprasad Police Station, Ishwar Chandra Gumansingh has been arrested today on charges of taking a bribe of Rs 7, 000 from a food vendor. Similarly, a woman Sub Inspector (SI) was suspended for not disclosing about cash seizure in a crackdown on a gambling den.

According to sources, a food vendor was clandestinely running illicit alcohol trade in the guise of a fast food centre. After receiving a complaint, Superintendent of Police (SP), Puri had directed the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) to investigate the matter.

During an investigation of the SDPO based on a complaint against Ishwar Chandra Gumansingh, it was learnt that the ASI had taken a bribe of Rs 7,000 from the vendor. Subsequently, Gumansingh was suspended and arrested.

In another case, Puri SP suspended Sadar Police Station SI Atashi Jena for not informing the Inspector In-Charge of the police station about a cash seizure during a raid on a gambling den in September.

Investigation is underway to find why she didn't inform about the raid and cash-seizure to the IIC. However, after finding guilty in the matter during SDPO's investigation, the SI was suspended.

"We won't tolerate crime in any means. Be it a cop or a criminal, we will take strict action against everyone. Efforts are being made to make Puri a crime free city," said Kanwar Vishal Singh, Puri SP, during a press meet.

Further, Puri SP informed that seven persons have been arrested in connection with a bombing incident near Lokanath road.
