Bhubaneswar: In another major crackdown on food adulteration units in the State, a joint squad of Odisha Police and Food Safety officials busted an adulterated sauce and pickle manufacturing unit at Pahal on the outskirts of the Capital City, on Wednesday.

Acting on a tip-off, the joint team made a swoop at P K Food Product and confiscated the stock of adulterated sauce and pickles. They also seized packaging machines, chemicals, artificial colour, essence and huge quantity of raw materials meant to make the edible commodities.

“The manufacturing unit was found preparing very low quality food products in unhygienic conditions. They are also using strong chemicals and colours which are beyond permissible level. We are examining the entire process of procurement and preparation of the food articles,” said a food safety official.

According to sources, the adulterated sauce and pickles, produced in the processing unit located right on the outskirts of the Capital City, are circulated in various parts of the State including the local market.

“The food safety licence of the unit is being examined. Samples of the adulterated food products have been seized and sent to a laboratory for testing,” said a police official.

“Further action will be taken after the receipt of the detailed test reports. We are also investigating its supply chain,” he said.

In September last year, the Commissionerate Police had unearthed a major adulterated sauce manufacturing unit in Jagatpur area of Cuttack. Besides, several other spurious food processing units were busted at different places in Cuttack in the last couple of months.
