Bhadrak: Police on Tuesday seized two vehicles allegedly transporting cattle in an illegal manner on NH-16 near Gelapur square under Rural police station in the district.

Two pick-up vans laden with cattle were intercepted by the members of a local social organisation while two other vans allegedly engaged in the illegal trade have fled.

On a tip off, youths of the local social organisation intercepted the vehicles. Two of the speeding vehicles managed to flee while two others have been captured. An SUV carrying around eight persons was escorting the bovine-laden vehicles, a local said.

"We tried to intercept all the vehicles. But, cattle smugglers coming in a Bolero terrorized us at gun point and managed to escape with two cattle-laden vehicles. We immediately informed police who reached the spot and seized two vehicles," said Pradip Mohan Parida, a local.

Police chased the speeding pick-up vans and the SUV, but failed to catch.

"We received a call from some local youths regarding the illegal cattle transportation and immediately swung into action. Two vehicles have been seized and some cattle have been rescued. The vehicles were being escorted by some people in an SUV. They fled the spot soon after our arrivals," said Sunaram Marandi, a police official.

Over 40 cattle, who were rescued from being illegally trafficked have been kept at a Gousala in Maidapur in the district.

The cattle were being trafficked to West Bengal from Panikoili area in Jajpur district, sources said.
