Jagatsinghpur: Four persons were arrested on Monday by Tirtol Police for their alleged involvement in the abduction of a teacher.

The accused have been identified as Biswajit Patra (21) and Pratap Mohanty (23) of Pandara village, Tapan Kumar Das (27) of Pitambarpur and Surykant Mohapatra (24) Brahmanabadi village.

As per reports, the teacher, Rabinarayan Mishra was abducted by the miscreants from Nalibara market in Tirtol on the night of December 2. After the abduction, the accused had demanded Rs 10 lakh as ransom from the family members of the teacher to release him. They freed Mishra after his family paid Rs 4 lakh.

However, after Mishra’s release, his family members lodged a complaint at Tirtol Police station. Acting on the complaint, the police raided several places and arrested the four accused.

According to police, one Ranjan Patra alias Raja, an antisocial having criminal antecedent is the mastermind of the crime.

"On the evening of December 2, Raja along with other accused had hatched a conspiracy to kidnap the teacher and demand ransom. They used a red Mahindra Maximo vehicle bearing registration number OD 21 B 8274 of Tapan Komar Das in the abduction of the teacher, the police said in a statement.

"The accused persons had intimidated the Mishra with fire arms and demanded ransom of Rs 10 lakh,' the statement added.

The police have recovered Rs 50,000 and the vehicle used in the kidnapping from them. However, three to four more accused including the kingpin Raja are still at large.
