Jajpur: Two vegetable godowns and three transport vehicles were reduced to ashes after a massive fire broke out at Green Market at Jajpur Road in Jajpur district on Monday.

The incident took place at around 3 pm today. The cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained. Vehicles which were burnt in the mishap include a truck, a tractor and a pick-up van.

Locals informed the fire tenders after they notice the fire in the godowns and vehicles. Soon two fire tender units rushed to the spot and launched operation to douse the flames. However, three vehicles and two godowns were completely reduced to ashes by the time the fire brought under control.

According to reports, over 500 traders earn their living by doing business at the vegetable market every day.

"We notice the fire at around 3 pm. Three vehicles were also burning and vegetables worth lakhs and other furniture in the godowns have been reduced to ashes," a local resident said.

A two-wheeler showroom closed to the market place, where over 100 bikes were stored, had a close shave due to timely intervention of the fire services personnel, he added.

A thorough investigation is required to find out the cause of the fire, he demanded.

Another local trader said that losses cannot be immediately estimated. Two godowns with thousands of vegetable trays, some documents have been reduced to ashes. A probe can ascertain the reason of the blaze, he added.
