Bhubaneswar: Odia Jawan Naik Ajit Kumar Sahoo was martyred following an IED blast in Jammu & Kashmir's Pulwama district on Monday. He was reportedly injured in the blast at Arihal yesterday, and succumbed to his injuries today, confirmed sources in Indian Army.

Sahoo, a resident of Badasuala village in Kamakhyanagar block of Dhenkanal district in Odisha, had joined the Indian Army in 2015.

According to sources, suspected militants Monday evening attacked an Army convoy in Arihal area of South Kashmir's Pulwama district, with an improvised explosive device (IED), fitted in a car.

Police sources claimed that six soldiers and two civilians were injured in the attack while the condition of three of them was stated to be critical.

This morning, a pall of gloom descended on Badasuala village after Sahoo's father reportedly received a telephone call from the Army camp informing about his son's death.

Expressing condolences over Sahoo's demise, Dhenkanal Collector Nikhil Pawan Kalyan has urged everyone to come in support of the family in this crucial time. "The Commandant in Bhubaneswar informed me about his demise. It's very unfortunate for us but it's a pride as well at the same time that he sacrificed his life for the country in the line of duty. Our deepest condolences to the family, we will extend all support to them," he expressed.

The Collector further stated, "I am in touch with the Commandant and Home department as well. We expect the body of the martyr will be brought to Odisha in service flight in the evening today. Later, the mortal remains will be brought to Dhenkanal for conduct of last rites."
