Bhubaneswar: A single unified emergency helpline number 112 was launched in Odisha on Friday. Now the citizens can ‘Dial 112’ for seeking emergency assistance from police, fire and ambulance.

The unified Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) with 112 as common dial number was launched by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik through video-conferencing.

As per official sources, the new facility has been launched for the residents of the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, Berhampur, Rourkela and other district headquarters in the first  phase.

Sources said that the calls made by users will be recorded and subsequently transferred to various emergency departments for necessary action at their ends. The State government has spent Rs 157 crores for this ambitious project.

All the existing emergency numbers- 100, 101, 102, 108 will remain functional and will be phased out after wide publicity of the dial 112 emergency number.
