Notorious criminal nabbed after gunfight in Koraput

Koraput: A notorious criminal was nabbed after an exchange of fire with police officials near Purunagada bypass in Jeypore area of the district early morning today.

The arrested criminal identified as Jitu Kana, was one of the accused who managed to escape following a gunfight with the police in Gopabandhu Nagar area here on August 18.

Acting on a tipoff, a special team of Jeypore police intercepted Jitu and his four associates while they were preparing to attempt a dacoity in Purunagada area at around 4.45 am.

Noticing their presence, the criminals opened fire at the cops following which the latter fired back in retaliation.

While Jitu was nabbed, his four other associates managed to escape. Police also seized a country-made gun, live bullets and empty shells from his possession.

“Jitu Kana open fired two rounds on us which hit our Bolero. However, we chased him down while others fled the spot. We are interrogating to elicit vital information from him,” informed Jeypore Town Police Station Inspector-in-Charge (IIC), Baleswar Giddhi.
