Bhubaneswar: Mercury continued to drop at several places of the State with 14 cities recording night temperature below 14 degree Celsius on Saturday. Sonepur was the coldest in the State with 7.6 degree Celsius, informed the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar.

Phulbani recorded 8.3 degree Celsius followed by Daringbadi 9 degree, Angul 10 degree, Bhawanipatna 10.1 degree, Koraput 11.6 degree, Sundargarh 12 degree, Keonjhar 12.4 degree, Bolangir 12.8 degree, Jharsuguda 13 degree, Baripada 13.4 degree, Hirakuda 13.6 degree and Sambalpur 13.7 degree.

Cuttack recorded 15.8 degree Celsius and Bhubaneswar 17.6 degree during the period, added the Met Centre.

Meanwhile, dense fog occurred at Chandbali in Bhadrak district and Paradip in Jagatsinghpur reducing visibility to 30 metres and 50 metres respectively. Shallow fog occurred in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Phulbani which reduced the visibility to 800 metres, added the Met Centre.

Meanwhile, normal life in Phulbani of Kandhamal district has been severely affected due to severe cold conditions and the headquarter town has been recording minimum temperature below 10 degree Celsius since last week.

As a result, people in most parts of the two districts are preferring to stay indoors and taking to bonfires to keep themselves warm. The motorists are also facing difficulties as dense fog engulfed the area till 9 AM.

"The temperature in Phulbani has dipped considerably in the last few days. People are staying indoors and wearing woolen clothes to beat the cold," said a resident of Phulbani.
