Bhubaneswar: With December and January being the coldest months in Odisha, the big relief is the State will not witness any cold wave this year, except in isolated pockets.

In fact, if IMD forecast is to be believed, the Christmas  this winter in Odisha will, indeed, be a 'merry Christmas' as temperatures across the State will see a spike.

However, it seems a cold, foggy and misty weather will greet the New Year Day in the State.

As per the IMD forecast, the State is not going to witness any cold wave this December. The forecast says the minimum temperature in the State will rise above normal in the coastal region during the Christmas. Though Phulbani will be witnessing cold wave till December 23, the minimum temperature will rise to around 9 degree Celsius on Christmas Day.

Despite rise in the minimum temperatures across the State, it will remain 1- 4 degree Celsius below normal in  the south and north interior districts of the State, which cannot be declared as cold wave.

However, the State will again witness a drop in mercury towards December end. And the forecast says, the New Year Day in the State will be cold, foggy and misty. While weather on the New Year Day in as many as 7 districts (Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Puri, Koraput and pockets in Balasore) is predicted to be foggy, it's mist in air in Phulbani and Sambalpur. Rest of the districts may see a partly cloudy sky, shows the weather model predictions.

Post the New Year Day, southern interior districts like Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada and coastal Ganjam will post a rise in mercury and the minimum temperature will hover above 14 degree Celsius.

The minimum temperature in the coastal districts till past mid-January  (up to Jan 16) will not drop below 11 degree Celsius. Cold wave is declared when the minimum temperature drops by around 6 deg C from the normal temperature. For which, met experts say Odisha will not witness cold wave in its coldest months this year.

However, there seems no respite for residents in western Odisha (from Nuapada to Sundargarh) and Phulbani as severe cold conditions will prevail in the region till January 16.
