Bolangir: Police today rescued the newborn boy who was stolen by a woman from the Patnagarh Hospital on February 6 (Wednesday). The police have also arrested the woman, who had taken away the baby, and one more person in connection with the incident.

A team of police reportedly initiated an investigation based on the CCTV footage and in the process carried out further probe basing on the registration number of the motorcycle involved in the theft.

Acting on a tip-off, police succeeded in rescuing the newborn and immediately arrested the woman and her accomplice.

Reportedly, one Jayanti Tandi of Telenapalli village had given birth to a baby boy last Sunday. Two days later, the accused woman came to the hospital and took the baby pretending to be a relative of Jayanti. However, by the time the family members realised what had happened, the woman had already vanished from their sight.

Soon after the incident, Jayanti’s family had lodged a complaint with the Patnagarh police.

The incident has been the talk of the town since then as the Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Patnagarh police station Anadi Matari was suspended by SP K.Siva Subramani for assaulting the father of the newborn.

The suspension order came after a video showing the ASI thrashing the man in full public glare during a protest over delay in investigation went viral on social media.
