Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today flagged off a mega plantation drive to promote the upcoming Men's Hockey World Cup at Kalinga Stadium as a "Green World Cup."

With the mega quadrennial sporting event all set to kick off in November this year, the State government has decided to initiate a mass plantation programme in and around the venue and other parts of the capital.

As part of the green initiative, volunteers of the Biju Yuva Bahini will plant as many as 30 lakh saplings in all panchayats and urban areas across the state.

Speaking at the event, Patnaik praised efforts of the Biju Yuva Bahini volunteers during the recently concluded Rath Yatra festival in Puri and urged them to take active participation in plantation activities and pollution prevention initiatives.

In a related development, the chief minister praised efforts of the state government for promoting the event in London, where Hockey playing nations are currently battling it out for Vitality Women's Hockey World Cup.

Two buses sporting Hockey World Cup Odisha logo & glimpses of Odisha's tourism potential are being plied on Central London and along Olympic Stadium Route (venue of the Vitality Women's Hockey World Cup), said reports.

"Our preparation for Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup has now made its way to London! Sporting the Odisha logo & glimpses of our tourism potential, the buses in the British capital are introducing Odisha to the world, as a sports capital & hosts of #HWC2018 #Odisha2018", Naveen tweeted today.

World's top 16 teams will play a total of 36 matches during the mega sporting event scheduled to be played between November 28 and December 16.
