Monsoon Withdrawal Complete from Odisha, Winter onset to take time!

Bhubaneswar: The Southwest Monsoon 2019 comes to an end on Tuesday as the IMD has declared that the Monsoon has withdrawn entirely from Odisha.

"The South West Monsoon on Tuesday has withdrawn from entire Odisha," said Regional Met Head HR Biswas.

Though this has been the most delayed withdrawal of Monsoon in the country, this is not so in case of Odisha.

As per the data available with IMD, the most delayed withdrawal span of more than 30 days happened in 2010, when the monsoon withdrew from Odisha on October 26-28.

An analysis of Monsoon withdrawal over the years (1958 -2018) reveals that the normal withdrawal date of monsoon from Odisha have been around Oct 15-16, except for the years of 1973, 1975, and 2010, when the withdrawal from Odisha commenced in the last week of October.

However, the regional Met Centre has predicted thunderstorm accompanied with lightning in Odisha on October 17 and 18. It has predicted thunderstorm with lightning at one or two places over the districts of Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Bhadrak and Mayurbhanj Thursday, while similar weather conditions are likely to prevail at one or two places over the districts of Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Bolangir, Bargarh, Sonepur, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Ganjam and Gajapati on Friday.

The weather maps (shown below) of US based Climate Prediction Centre (CPC) also show thunderstorm and lightning activities over the same districts in Odisha on October 17 and 18.

As per the CPC,  the precipitable watervapour over Odisha from October 17-19 will be in the range of 75 -55 mm. Precipitable water vapour indicates the potential of rain storm on those days.

Post the withdrawal of Monsoon, Odisha is not going to witness cooler climes as the dew point temperature of the State has been predicted to remain over 21 degree Celsius till October 19.
