Koraput: The district police here on Thursday suspended and arrested a police Sub Inspector on charges of accepting bribe from the kin of an accident victim, Koraput SP Mukesh Kumar Bhamoo informed at a presser.

According to police sources, one Debendra Tanti of Mulasura village under Ambaguda police outpost limits was killed in an accident on December 24, 2019 at Kumuliput. But instead of showing sympathy, SI Narayan Pattnaik, the Officer In-charge of Ambaguda Outpost allegedly demanded the kin of the deceased to pay Rs 10,000 for clearing insurance and other works. Later the aggrieved family reportedly paid him Rs 6000.

The matter came to the attention of the State government when the family of the deceased narrated the whole incident during a opinion call by the Chief Minister's office under the Mo Sarkar initiative.

Briefing OTV, Koraput SP Mukesh Kumar Bhamoo said, "Based on adverse feedback received by the CMO about the integrity of SI Narayan Pattnaik, we enquired into the matter and after finding it to be true, the police official was placed under suspension with immediate effect."

On this basis the police registered a case vide Jeypore Sadar PS Case No. 24/2020 Dt. 06/02/2020 U/S 7(A) Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act 2018 and arrested the SI.

"We practice zero tolerance towards such misconduct and moral turpitude especially after implementation of Mo Sarkar by the State government and so the SI has been arrested under a criminal case," said the SP.

Similarly, cops have also launched probe into the involvement of a doctor in the case.

Sources said, a doctor of Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital allegedly demanded Rs 3000 from the family of the deceased for post-mortem purposes, following which they paid him Rs 2500.
