Koraput: The body of a 17-year-old girl was recovered from a well at Chorimaliput under Semiliguda police limits of Koraput district on Tuesday.

The girl, who hailed from Sorisapadar, reportedly had a love marriage with one Upendra Khara of Chorimaliput recently. However, Khara’s parents were reportedly against the marriage and did not accept the girl as their daughter-in-law.

The girl’s mother-in-law claimed that she committed suicide by jumping into the well at around 5.30 am on Tuesday.

On the other hand, the family members of the minor girl lodged a complaint at local police station alleging that she was abducted by the youth and murdered.

On the basis of the complaint, senior police officers including SDPO of Subabeda and Nandapur along with IICs of four police stations visited the spot and inquired into the matter.

“A meeting was held between both the families yesterday, but that failed to resolve the issue,” said Niranjan Behera, SDPO, Sunabeda.

“The body was retrieved from the well with the help fire fighters and sent for post-mortem. We suspect the girl committed suicide, but the exact cause of death will be ascertained after the post-mortem report arrives,” the SDPO said.

The youth and his father have been detained and their interrogation is underway. Two platoons of police forces were deployed at the village to thwart any untoward incident.
