Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) Monday sought a report from the Superintendent of Police (SP), Rourkela in connection with the alleged third-degree torture of a minor boy at Udit Nagar Police Station in Rourkela.

Registering a suo motu case over the alleged assault on the minor boy, the Commission has directed the SP to launch an enquiry into the incident.

It is said that the minor, who is an orphan and lives with his grandmother in Timber Colony of Rourkela, was allegedly beaten up and subjected to electric shock in the police custody during interrogation in connection with a theft case.

Coming across a media report in this regard, OHRC has taken suo motu cognizance and issued notice to Rourkela SP to cause an enquiry into the matter and submit a report to the Commission by February 15.

"A destitute boy belonging to Rourkela Timber Colony was taken to a Police Station at Rourkela, where he was beaten and kicked by boot. It is stated that the Police, instead of sending the boy to Swadhar Home, detained him inside the Police Station without providing him food. Considering the facts, suo motu cognizance is taken," the Commission mentioned in its notice quoting the report.

Reportedly, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has also launched an investigation into the alleged assault on the minor boy in police custody.
