Bhubaneswar: Amid the novel coronavirus scare across the globe, a microbiology report of a patient admitted to AMRI Hospitals in Bhubaneswar has caused a lot of chaos in the capital city. Reason, the report shows the patient is having coronavirus traces in his body.

As soon as the report set social media platforms ablaze, the hospital authorities issued a clarification stating that this is not the similar strain to the Covid-19, the disease spread by the novel coronavirus strain, and therefore there's no need to panic. The microbiologist also made it clear that it’s normal to find positive coronavirus of other strain.

The central laboratory report of the elderly patient Bijay Kumar Nayak has detected coronavirus but there was no evidence of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus or MERS‐CoV.

Detailing about the same, AMRI Medical Superintendent Dr Manish Kumar informed that Nayak is suffering from Pneumonia and there is no evidence of coronavirus (MERS-CoV). "At times, normal Indian strain of coronavirus may be detected during laboratory investigation which is actually normal flora in human beings. AMRI Hospitals is fully equipped to handle any type of medical emergencies whenever required. So, there's no reason to panic with these rumours," the doctor said.

Based on the opinion of the medical experts, AMRI issued a clarification regarding the same and has requested everyone not to panic. "One pathology report of AMRI Hospitals is now viral on social media platforms, indicating that coronavirus is detected in a patient. We may like to inform that it is the common coronavirus, not the Novel Coronavirus or Covid-19. Only National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune and some limited Government laboratories have the facility to test novel Coronavirus or Covid-19. We should not panic or create panic."

It is pertinent to mention that a few days back, around seven samples were sent from Regional Medical Research Centre in Bhubaneswar to NIV Pune for novel coronavirus, and all tested negative. The Centre has reportedly been declared as nodal for coronavirus testing.

On the other hand, the death toll from China’s coronavirus epidemic has surged to 2,000, reported AFP news agency quoting the government.
