Bhubaneswar: The mercury will take a nip in Odisha around the 72nd Republic Day. A few places in Sundergarh and Jharsuguda may see the night time temperature plummeting to below 8 degree Celsius. The whole of the State may witness the minimum temperature dipping below 14 deg C during third week of January.

As per the IMD forecast released today, Odisha will record below normal minimum temperature in the month of January. At the same time, the forecast says, the day time temperature will remain 4-5 deg C higher than the normal January temperature till the fest of Makar Sankranti. However, in the later period the maximum temperature will remain around 1-2 deg C higher than the normal January maximum temperature.

At the same time, the IMD January outlook has predicted the continuance of dry weather in the State in this first month of the New Year.

The big observation for January, therefore, is nights will be cooler and days to be warmer in Odisha during the month. However, the mean temperature in the month will hover around the normal January mean temperature, predicts the report.

Odisha Weather Post Monsoon

Even as the State had not received a millimetre of rainfall in December, the cumulative rainfall Odisha received during the post monsoon period (October – December) had been in excess due to the copious rainfall the State received during the month of October 2020. IMD, therefore, had put Odisha in the category of states that had received excess rainfall during the post monsoon period. In the post monsoon period, Odisha received an excess of 27 per cent rain vis-a-vis the normal rainfall of 675.8mm.

Balasore and parts of Mayurbhanj have the cooler days in the State.

The average mean temperature in the State in December had been measured at around 20-22 deg C, which is the near normal December temperature, except in western Odisha where the mean temperature was measured higher than normal.

The month of December in Odisha saw one cold wave. The report said, “Cold wave conditions at isolated places had been observed in Odisha during December 20-24.”

Regarding foggy conditions, IMD outlook report said, “The State didn’t witness any dense fog conditions during the month of December 2020.”

“The temperature outlook of Odisha for the month of December 2020 shows the month has not seen any major change in temperature variation. The month was neither the coldest nor anywhere near warmest in State’s history,” infers the IMD report.
