Bhubaneswar: Odisha Cabinet on Monday approved a resolution proposing quota in Medical and Engineering courses for students of government-run schools in the State.

Students, completing their education in the State-run schools will have a reservation during admission into Medical and Engineering courses.

A high-powered committee will be formed under the chairmanship of a retired Orissa High Court judge to fix the modalities in three months for the effective implementation of the recommendations from the next academic year.

As students of government-run schools in rural belts, who are preparing for JEE Main, are unable to get as many facilities that candidates in urban areas are getting, a decision has been taken to provide reservation to those students in admission to MBBS and B.Tech courses, said State School and Mass Education Minister, Sameer Das.

The committee will give final shape to the decision and submit details following which it will be implemented from the next academic year, he added.

The State government's will definitely change the mindset of parents and students will also get attracted to government schools. Students who are academically meritorious will definitely get benefitted from this new decision, opined a teacher.

The proposal to include the life history of noted personalities of the State in the school syllabus from Std VII to Std IX also got Odisha Cabinet’s nod.

Besides, the State Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also accorded approval to the proposal of submission of property details by people representatives and government servants in the public domain every year.
