Kendrapara: They thrashed me, tied to bed and set me on fire after pouring kerosene, said Rashmita Das of Kendrapara while recounting the horror of the torture allegedly inflicted upon her by in-laws.

Rashmita’s only fault was that she was wearing some gold ornaments against the wishes of her in-laws. From a minor argument, the situation become so violent that Rashmita’s in-laws did not think for a second before trying to kill her.

With nearly 90 per cent burn injuries, Rashmita is now battling for her life at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

“They (In-laws) tried to kill my sister by setting her on fire. I want justice for my sister,” said Rashmita’s sister, Sasmita.

The shocking incident has been reported from Bardia village under Rajnagar block of Kendrapara district. It was one and a half years back that Rashmita of Dhaneswarpur had tied the nuptial knot with Bikram in 2018.

Rashmita’s husband works in Qatar and her in-laws were allegedly torturing her for reasons unknown.

According to reports, Rashmita was happy and was preparing to visit her parents on February 1. However, Rashmita’s in-laws started abusing her for wearing gold ornaments and tried to kill her by setting her on fire.

Based on the complaint filed by Rashmita’s parents at Rajnagar Police Station, the cops have arrested her father-in-law, mother-in-law and a sister-in-law. Even as two other in-laws are still absconding, police officials refused to comment on the shocking incident.
