Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday sealed the Market Building in Unit-2 over alleged violation of social distancing and other Covid-19 protocols.

The market area, one of the busiest in the capital city, was sealed for 48 hours in the presence of city deputy commissioner of police (DCP) and BMC zonal commissioner.

“Social distancing is being blatantly violated here. We can never beat the virus if the safety protocols are flouted in such away. Therefore, we were forced to seal the market area for 48 hours,” said BMC Additional Commissioner, LaxmikantSethi.

“Many people are roaming freely without masks and there is no systematic arrangements at shops here to avoid crowd. The scenes baffled the fact the we are in the midst of a pandemic,” Sethi added.

He said as the 48-hour curb will end on Friday and the weekend shutdown begin on Saturday, the Market Building will open on Monday.

The Capital City today witnessed a major jump in the daily Covid-19 cases with 1044 persons testing positive for the virus. It include 825 local contact cases and 219 quarantine cases. The city also registered recovery of 447 persons from the disease.
