Rourkela: After facing discrimination and financial problems, an armed Maoist of Sambalpur-Deogarh-Sundergarh division surrendered before Rourkela SP on Thursday.

Maoist Poga Soren aka Suman, who is a resident of Jharkhand, was involved in a number of Naxal violence cases in Odisha. Rourkela SP K. Shiva Subramani informed that Suman had joined the Maoists in 2013-14 and was working under the leader Misir Besra.

For a brief period in 2015, Suman had left the group and went to take care of his elderly parents in Jharkhand and also worked in a factory there. Later, Suman joined the rebel group in March 2018 again and was actively involved in several violence cases in Lahunipada and Gurundia areas in Odisha.

Rourkela SP informed that the Maoist cadre also worked for Maoist leader Anmol and was involved in the exchange of fire with police at Lahunipada in 2018.

Senior police officials informed the Maoist will be provided with all benefits as per the rehabilitation policy of the State government.

Earlier in September last year, Maoist Mangal Singh Munda (20) had also surrendered in Rourkela following intensification of anti-Naxal operations by security forces and his disillusionment with Maoist ideology. An area committee member of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) in Sundergarh, Sambalpur and Deogarh, Munda had also worked as a bodyguard of central committee member Mihir Besra.

According to police officials, Munda operated in Bundu, Chandil, Kolhan and nearby areas till 2012. In 2013, Munda entered Sundergarh where he was involved in many cases. Munda was also involved in several gun battles with the security forces in Deogarh, Sundergarh, Sambalpur and Angul areas.

A hardcore Maoist cadre, Dula Madkami carrying a reward of Rs 2 lakh on his head surrendered before Malkangiri police in September 2019.

In December last year, over 250 Maoist sympathisers surrendered before Mathili Police in Malkangiri district.
