Kalahandi: As the entire country was busy in Independence Day celebrations, an exchange of fire between the security forces and Maoists was reported from Kalahandi district in Odisha today.

A huge cache of ammunition including detonators was seized following the encounter at Gundi forest under Sadar Police limits. Four bags containing medicines and other articles reportedly belonging to the rebels have also been recovered.

Acting on a tip-off, the security forces stumbled upon a Maoist camp during a combing operation.

“On spotting the police team, the Maoists opened fire and the security forces retaliated. The exchange of fire continued for 10 minutes and the rebels fled the spot,” said Kalahandi SP B Gangadhar.

Police sources said there were at least 10 Maoists at the camp when the security forces raided the spot. As per reports, one Maoist has sustained critical injuries in the exchange of fire.
