Bhubaneswar: A man who climbed atop the Parija Library on the premises of Utkal University and threatened to commit suicide has finally been rescued after a three-hour long operation by the fire services personnel and police teams.

The man, formerly employed with the postal department, is stated to be a resident of Praharajpur under Pattamundai police limits of Kendrapara district. He was under severe mental duress after losing his job, said his father.

Sources said he was missing for the past one month and a complaint in this regard was also lodged at Nuapalli police station.

Reportedly, the campus witnessed noisy scenes as a large number of students and locals gathered near the library to watch the man. It was akin to the scene from Bollywood movie Sholay, but the only difference was this was real and bizarre.

No sooner than the news broke, personnel of the fire services and police department rushed to the campus and launched a massive rescue operation to save the man. While fire services personnel first tried to get closer to the man by using Bronto Skylift and some climbing the building, drone cameras were also used to keep an eye on the situation and movement of the man.

A psychiatrist was also pressed into action by the rescue team, who was lifted by the Bronto skylift to take food for the man and convince him to get down.

Immediately after the man was rescued, he was rushed to Capital Hospital for necessary treatment.

Odisha government, meanwhile, felicitated chief fire officer, Sukanta Sethi, deputy fire officer, Ramesh Chandra Majhi and entire Fire Services team engaged in rescue work.
