Kendrapara: Months after Supreme Court of India’s judgement and subsequent law passed by the central government, cases of triple talaq continues to come up in Odisha.

In another such instance, police on Monday registered a case against a man for allegedly giving triple talaq to his wife at Mirzapatna village in Derabis block of Kendrapara district.

According to sources, the complainant Rumana Parween married Sallaudin Khan in January last year. However, when she could not fulfil the dowry demands, she was mentally and physically tortured by her husband and in-laws.

Later Rumana’s husband separated from her by uttering ‘talaq’ three times, the woman said in her complaint.

“My husband used to beat me mercilessly over dowry. He also threatened to kill my daughter. He gave me divorce by uttering ‘talaq’ thrice. My in-laws also asked me to leave the house and forcefully took my signature in the divorce paper,” the complainant said.

While comments of the accused husband of the woman could not be obtained over the matter, the in-laws however refuted the charges and denied giving triple talaq to the complainant.

Family member of Sallaudin said, the case would be settled after compromising with the complainant.

On the other hand, a local resident said that they do not have any knowledge about the triple talaq between them as it was their personal issue.

Recently, there were reports of a Muslim man allegedly wanting to separate from his wife by uttering triple talaq over phone. The incident was reported from Balisahi village in Aul block of Kendrapara.

Notably, the Supreme Court had banned triple talaq in August 2017. The bill makes instant triple talaq or talaq-e-biddat a criminal offence, with a jail term of up to three years along with a hefty fine.
