Malkangiri: A day after a Class I student of government-run residential school drowned in a canal in Sadar block of Malkangiri district, five staff of the Sevashram were suspended for the alleged negligence in duty. The school is reportedly run by SC/ST Department, Government of Odisha.

Monday morning, the deceased Amit Kalekura of Gangala Sevashram, instead of defecating in the hostel toilets, went to a nearby canal to attend nature's call. However, he accidentally slipped and drowned in the canal. Receiving information, police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Pandi Community Health Centre for post mortem.

Following this, police launched an investigation after registering an unnatural death case.

As per latest reports, the Headmaster, an Assistant teacher and matron of the Gangala Sevashram have been suspended for dereliction of duty. This apart, two cooks of the hostel have been dismissed for letting the boy out of the hostel premises.

It is pertinent to mention here that a few other students decided to vacate the hostel yesterday after the tragic incident. They were somehow convinced by the administration to get back to their hostel.
